I am unable to unistall this game. Every time I try unistalling it through the Itch app, it fails. :/

Edit: Restarting Itch helped.

(+1)

Hello! I admire these types of games, especially uninvited and shadowgate. I saw your work and I absolutely love it! I want to make these types of games myself, and I am interested on how you did it in game maker. I would appreciate it if we talk about . Love this dude! Here is my email in case: blackrossilupin@gmail.com

(+1)

Remarkable, atmospheric homace to the adventure 8bit nes. I wanted to ask if there is a window display option to do a video of this adventure?

(+1)

Thank you very much, that's much appreciated. Unfortunately there is no window display option at this time. Sorry about that

(+1)

Will you GrahfMetal make a menu-based point and click game based off of "The Ten Commandments" which is a religious movie from 1956 but modernized?

(+1)

I'm afraid the visual grand epics like the classics are far beyond the scope of my humble little games, unless you are refering to the religious aspect, to which  I don't do religion or politics

Could you make a "Nature" themed menu based point and click game?

Once I finish the game I'm currently working on I'll think of the next idea, but thanks for all  the suggestions

(1 edit) (+1)

Will there ever be an "Infested 2"?

(+1)

No Infested 2, but in the future I'd love to make another game (or two) in this style. I have a few ideas I'm playing around with and on my free time I'm working on some concepts

(+1)(-1)

Will there be a "Pirate" theme menu-based point and click game? Or a western theme menu-based point and click game? Maybe even a Pre-historic theme menu-based point and click game? Possibly a menu-based point and click game that takes place in Egypt or a  menu-based point and click game that takes places in the setting of the timeline of the movie "The 10 Commandments"

(+2)

The one I'm currently working on, Spirit Quest, is Arabian Nights themed in 16-bit. It will have more of a focus on Spells and visual puzzles. It will also feature Day and Night cycles. It's rather ambitious so it'll be a while before it's done.

(+1)

I will love it when it's done. Let me know when it's done GrahfMetal i'm so happy i can't wait.

(+2)

I hope after "Spirit Quest" you can make a western theme menu-based point and click game.

I hope you can also make a "MacVenture" style game in the format of "Shadowgate" "Uninvited" "Deja Vu" & "Infested" that takes place in Egypt. Also 1 that takes place in either Antarctica or Alaska. Plus 1 that takes place in Japan.

(+1)

I had been interested in trying Shadowgate for the first time. At the sametime though I was also curious what other similar games there were out there, and when I did a google search, I came across Infested.

Played it yesterday and really enjoyed it! I must say you totally nailed it! I really hope to see another game from you soon.

(+2)

Thank you very much, I'm very happy you enjoyed it :D

Make sure to try out Deja-Vu and Uninvited from the makers of Shadowgate as well. It would be nice to make more "Shadowgate" style games for sure and hopefully we'll be able to sooner than later :D

(-1)

I hope you can a "Western" theme menu-based point and click game after "Spirit Quest" and the "Nature" theme menu based point and click game have been made okay?

(+2)

I really wish I could say more, but this game is just perfect. I loved the music, the art, the sounds, the puzzles, the interface... it's literally perfect.
The only complaint is that you don't have more of these to play. I wouldn't have minded if this one was longer and with some slightly more involved puzzles. It was really a treat to play.
This is a top notch example on how to make a game in the same/similar style or genre.
I would love to see you make more just like this as well as higher resolution versions with the same/similar interface. (updated/improved versions of this style) and with different story genres. Keep up the amazing work. I look forward to seeing more from you! Thank you for letting us play!

(+1)

Wow! Thank you so much for these wonderful words. This means so much to us to hear that we achieved what we set out to accomplish with this tribute. I'm very glad you enjoyed it. We have a couple similar "Shadowgate-style" projects on the back-burner, but work and life obligations have been getting in the way. Hopefully We'll make the time to release another game like this

(+2)

You're very welcome. It's great to see a project come to completion and that's done with such love, care, and attention to detail as well as seeing a team take real pride in their work. I totally understand that sentiment and can't wait to play those future projects.

(+1)

Hi! I was just playing Uninvited the other day when I saw this. Very excited to play it. If only every classic game series got sequels made like that look and sound as authentic as this! I'm having some trouble running the Mac version. It runs but nothing comes up on screen. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. I hope I can get it working. You guys have obviously worked really hard and it shows.

(+1)

Sorry, unfortunately none of us are Mac experts and it works fine on one of our Macs, so we don't know what the problem could be. We've looked into it but don't really have any idea. Really sorry about that. Otherwise; thanks for the kind words, we really appreciate it

(+1)

im kind of obsessed with speedrunning these games, i managed to get from start to finish in 7:41 if anyone wants to try and beat that haha =)

amazing game, grahf. good scenario, great music, and a wonderful interface all around.  looking forward to future projects!!

(1 edit) (+1)

also i hope your programmer doesnt take it personally but i found a really fun glitch where if you enter an input before a dialog box fully pops up (easy to do by mashing the hot keys), the box wont prevent you from taking actions. you have to memorize where certain stuff is on the screen but thats definitely got more potential than i got out of it

edit: i uploaded a small sample, as you can see it makes the game very fast! i didnt get a lot of practice with it yet though, it's a very temperamental trick despite being very simple.

(1 edit)

Awesome! I'm so glad you're getting so much out of this game, that means a lot. We're actually aware of that exploit and I sometime use it myself, to be honest. We kept it in cause it's a fun little speed-running trick. There's actually another little trick you might figure out down the road ;) . Do you plan on uploading any playthroughs on YouTube? We'd love to check it out.

That's an incredible time. About 3 1/2 min. faster than my own time. Good stuff :D

(1 edit) (+1)

oh awesome! im glad you left it in haha, it feels great when you can get a bunch in a row.  i might post a demo soon - im pretty sure i have the route nailed down but ive been testing your logic looking for another little thing to skip (being able to head toward the bridge area first cuts out a huge portion of backtracking & lets you do basically everything you need to on the other side at once). gotta hand it to ya, its really robust!

oh suddenly im curious if i could override a death scene by moving to a different room or something before it activates. the only use i could think would be on the way to get the coords but hey an idea's an idea. edit: this does not work haha

thanks again =)

(+1)

I loved Infested!! Can't wait for more MacVenture style games. Deja Vu was a favorite of mine when I was a kid.

Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it :D

(+1)

What a gorgeous tribute to a forgotten genre. The music, the pacing, the writing, the art, it's all spectacular. I know you're past this, but if you were to make more and release them on Steam, I bet it could be lucrative for you. (I want more, waaah) Thanks for all your hard work on this project (everyone involved).

(+1)

Thank you so much, that means the world to us. I'm currently working on another "shadowgate" style game and when the three of us have the time we'll definitely put it together. I'm glad to see more and more people looking forward to games like these, they've always been a favorite of mine :D

(+1)

I'd thought about making an NES Macventure-esque game for years, but feared I'd never match the overall feeling the original three gave me when I was a kid. You've accomplished it perfectly. I hope to see more from you guys someday. Thank you for making this.

Thank you so much for playing it and thank you for the kind words. It's always very satisfying to hear that players got their nostalgic macverse fix playing the game :D

(1 edit) (+1)

Just wanted to mention that for years, I've been yearning for a romhack, an indie game, anything, in the style of the old MacVenture games on NES, and not only does this game fit the bill, but this is easily one of the best adventure games I've ever played.  In a lot of ways this game even surpasses the quality of the originals. Thank you so much for making this! I'm sharing this on my social media and buying the soundtrack!

Thank you very much for the kind words and for the support. Very glad this game was what you were looking for as we too were yearning for a return of the NES MacVenture style game :D

(+1)

Playing this has reignited a burning  passion for point & click narrative games, after I played this I started to play even more point & click games.

Your style was very reminiscent of some classic games from my childhood and it was blast to play this.

Awesome! Thanks for playing.  I love the CRT filter, that's a good touch. I always enjoy watching play-throughs and seeing those gleeful moments of discovery after some frustration and deaths. I look forward to seeing the rest.

(+1)

I was curious... Do you have any other projects like this; or links to any other similar point and click adventure games that have been released in the last few years? I tried very carefully to read the entire comments thread before posting here. I see you are currently engaged in a "Spirit Quest." Sounds super exciting!! :) Any input would make a super-bored kid über-happy!

Nothing else, unfortunately. I'm currently working on another game [Spirit Quest] on the side but I don't know when that will be completed. Hopefully next year. As for other similar point and click games; I can't think of any off the top of my head that are specifically this style. Actually, the reason we made this was because nobody else was really making Shadowgate style games

(+1)

Well, thanks just the same! I was elated when I saw this brew. I can't thank you enough for bringing something such as this to our minds and eyes. Took me FOREVER to figure out what to throw at that darned switch to suck that creature out. I admit to cheating... once. I looked at a walkthrough and saw where there was that "carbon rock" in the grating. I was stuck on that for an hour. So, great challenge there. I played it through four times. A bit short, but I'm delighted just the same. I can't wait for your next one!I'll keep checking every month here to see if there are any updates. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your kind words. Very happy you enjoyed it. It was a huge relief when we saw how many people were craving an old-school point and click like this. I hope I can have some new updates soon :D

(+1)

Lovely game, enjoyed it very much.

Just the right lengths for a single sitting, yet not too short. Also hits the nostalgia mark, reminded me of J.E.S.U.S. and of course ICOM.

Some nice puzzles and no illogical problems to get stuck with.

Great work guys

Thank you so much! I'm very glad you enjoyed it :D

(+1)

Wow, ICOM Simulations has done Fantasy, Detective Noir, and Haunted Houses, and now they've even done Sci-Fi!

Wait, this wasn't done by ICOM?

In all seriousness, this was a fantastic game. About as long as the actual ICOM Simulation Macventures (At least on the first playthrough, perhaps slightly shorter when going through it a second time, which is really just a speedrun like the others), and just as fun.

Given the resurgence of Point and Clicks in recent years, if something like this was slightly expanded, or perhaps a new game in the style altogether, Macventures having always been my favorite style of Point and Click games, I honestly wouldn't think twice about buying this. Hell, for five dollars or so I probably would have bought this anyway.

It has the same pitfalls that the Macventures did, with cheap deaths and whatnot, but you did keep the NES mechanic of starting a screen prior to death. Also, being able to simply right click to close is pretty handy, although the text speed is a bit slow and can't be skipped like in the NES games, the text is also a bit too close together at points, and the while the screen transitions use the same sprites as the NES games, though don't animate as fluidly. Those are all really minor complaints, but it's otherwise a fantastically put together little game. I'll likely revisit it before I do Deja Vu at least.

Thank you so much. Any complaints you have, minor or not, are certainly welcome as that allows us to improve for next time so, thanks for the awesome feedback and I'm very glad  you enjoyed it. I wanted the game to be free so everyone can be introduced to this wonderful style of game and so "old-school" gamers like us can take a trip down memory lane. Of course, if you would like to donate than you should consider purchasing the soundtrack by Orie Falconer. We would greatly appreciate that :D https://oriefalconer.bandcamp.com/album/infested-original-soundtrack-2

(+1)

What a fantastic game!  I'm a huge fan of those classic NES "MacVenture" games, and this was, well, definitely one of them, heh.

My only big complaints are there's no way to make the text appear quickly (like you could in the NES ones), and that thing where a word starts to appear on one line before suddenly jumping down to the next after realizing there's not enough room (it just looks really unprofessional).

Also a shame there was no "You messed up!" music before dying, though I think only Uninvited had that...

But I really liked how examining everything gave plenty of hints on what to do, and I especially liked finding things I could do before finding out why they're necessary (like being able to turn the power off), plus the inclusion of "useless" items, especially with how most of them you can't tell they're going to be useless until the very end.

Oh, and I especially liked how, if you die from the infection, the counter resets when you continue (just like with that ruby in Uninvited).

In any case, great job on this!  I definitely enjoyed it!

-Andrew

Thank you very much. I really appreciate feedback and constructive criticism 'cause it helps me improve for future projects and you made some really good points here. I'll definitely keep them in mind and I'm glad you enjoyed it :D

Shadowgate is one of my favorite games ever. This is great. Thank you for making it.

Thank you very much! Glad you liked it.

(+1)

Hi there! Could you release a Linux version for us Linux gamers? :)

Unfortunately we can't create any Linux builds at the moment, but it is something we could do in the future! We will post any updates here if it happens

(+1)

I really liked this game.

Are you still working on Spirit Quest?

Thank you for playing, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I am still working on Spirit Quest. Unfortunately I can't give you any sort of estimate on it's completion/release at this time :(

(1 edit) (+1)

Thanks.

(1 edit) (+1)

Hey guys! I played your game on my Twitch stream a few nights back. Here is a YouTube video of the gameplay. Please feel free to use portions of the video any way you like: https://youtu.be/qd4bbJpWj0Q

Thanks for making this game. It was really good.

(+1)

This was very fun the watch. Thank you so much

(1 edit) (+1)

This takes me back to the good 'ol NES days. Thanks for this game. It's fantastic.

(+1)

Thanks for playing!

(+1)

Here is part 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFSA1NtRNx0

(1 edit)

Good stuff, this is awesome!

(+1)

Had a wonderful time playing this all morning after reading about it in PCG. Loved the music, the art, the whole vibe. Even the frustration felt kind of good, that little tingle that brought me back to adventure game classics. I'm working on a space game in Twine, and it was really inspiring to see a finished quality piece. Thanks for the work, look forward to playing anything else from you!

Well thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's always good to hear people finding that nostalgic vibe playing it. That truly makes it all worth while

(+1)

Put up the first video in a series for this game - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSX6n59Bcf8

(+1)

I LOVE your game. I am a huge fan of Shadowgate, Deja vu and Uninvited and it has always saden me that Kemco never did more games in the same style.

But you guys were really spot on with your game! All from story to puzzelsolving to the music. It really FEELS like the others and I am so impressed!

I really hope you are considering trying to do more adventures in this style with the same theme or other themes.

So thank you for this game and the oppertunity to feel the same rush of nostalgia and excitement as while playing the others!

Keep on rocking! ^-^

Thank you so much for your kind words. It really makes us happy when players get a sense of nostalgia playing Infested. Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for playing.

(+1)

I had fond memories of Shadow Gate, but never played the others, nicely done, you captured it pretty well.

Thank you, I appreciate it. Deja-Vu and Uninvited are definitely worth checking out. They're not as memorable as Shadowgate but they're really fun. Uninvited is more or less Shadowgate but in a modern setting whereas Deja-Vu has some really interesting mechanics that make it stand out.

(+1)

I thoroughly enjoyed the game, so thanks for making it! It definitely reminded me of Shadowgate, one of my all-time favourite games.

The only part in the game I found frustrating was adding the chemicals to the water supply--it'd be helpful if it was more descriptive rather than simply beeping when the chemical combination wasn't correct.

There appeared to be a bug involving the space suit and boots and the outer door; I was able to safely open the door without having them in my inventory after loading a previous save where I hadn't yet collected them. By the way, you'd get blown out into space--not sucked.

Anyway, fantastic work! Thanks so much.

Thank you for the feedback, it's really appreciated. In the immortal words of Lt. Commander Data "Blown out, not sucked out in to space. A common misconception" ;) You're absolutely right. I'm very glad you enjoyed. bringing back nostalgia for Shadowgate was the whole purpose of making this game and it's always good to hear that it reminds players of that. As for the water supply chemical puzzle; there actually is a way to find the combination through examination of previously discovered elements on the ship. The reason for the "guessing game" was to be more lenient. As for the space suit glitch; thank you for the detailed description as that helps with our improvements.

(+1)

I did identify the chemical combination in the manner you had intended. I just mean before that happened, I found the water mixing system unintuitive. From what I recall, after randomly adding a few chemicals and then examining the system it would say something like "the chemicals are mixed and now you just have to run it," and then pressing the button would just cause a beeping sound. But regardless I loved the game, so thanks again!

Sorry, I missunderstood what you meant at first. I fully understand now. You're very welcome for the game and thanks again for the awesome feedback.

(+1)

Just discovered this game (featured in PC Gamer in the UK), enjoyable, a little frustrating at times, though I assume that's to go without saying with these types of games. Might have discovered a bug, was wearing the space suit and boots, but was still sucked out into space (I'd saved the game, so don't know if something happened there). Might be worth mentioning that you're wearing the suit as well if you examine yourself?

Yeah, the frustration is kinda part of the nostalgia ;)

Someone else reported that bug as well. Thanks for reporting it so we know it wasn't an isolated incident. As for the Examining Self to see you are wearing the suit; that is a very good point, We'll definitely keep that in mind. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks again for the feedback :)

Deleted 7 years ago

Total fair point about the installer, we'll look into having a tighter/neater package next time (e.g. no installer).

Glad you liked it overall, glad you appreciated the polish! Thx for playing.

(+1)

Is there a way to play this game windowed? I sometimes chat with friends when I'm playing games, and since this game runs on full screen, I have to alt-tab in order to keep chatting. :<

(1 edit)

Unfortunately, we didn't put in an option for windowed-mode. If we update the game, we'll look into adding it in. But, it will definitely be an option in the next game!

(+1)

Okay. That's good to know! It's a bit disappointing that I can't play this in windowed mode, but it's still a very fun game and a blast from the past.

(+1)

I just finished playing this game and I really enjoyed it! I have been waiting for a nes styled adventure game in the vein of Shadowgate, Deja Vu, and Uninvited for a long time. Thank you, Grahfmetal, for making a successor that retains the look and feel of the 3 games. I also have to say the story of this game is very similar to the japanese adventure game 'Tale of the Dreadful Bio Monster,' anyone ever play that one?

Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've never heard of 'Tale of the Dreadful Bio Monster' so I did a quick search and I gotta say it looks really cool. I'll have to look it up in more detail. Judging by some of the screen shots it looks like it was translated too...you've peaked my interest. Thanks!

(+1)

If you do end up playing it, the only warning I have about the game is that it has some annoying sound effects, otherwise let me know what you think of the game if you do end up playing it through. It shares similarities with this game concept and story wise.

(+1)

I've recorded a commentary-free longplay video of Infested and posted it to my YouTube channel. https://youtu.be/AkDBlXp6U28

Awesome! You covered all of the puzzles and little details throughout. We really appreciate that!

(1 edit) (+1)

Has anyone taken the time to throw together a spoiler-free hint book for this game? I have the space suit, but can't figure out what to do with the portable cryptographic device, nor do I know how to get rid of the slime creature. He seems to be blocking the only door that provides access to the outside of the space station. What am I missing?

(+1)

Derr. Figured out what the carbon rock is for. I thought that the space suit and magnetic boots would anchor me, why did I still get sucked out into space?

(+1)

I started the game completely over and this time the magnetic boots worked like they were supposed to. You guys did an awesome job on this game! Even the official Shadowgate remake failed to evoke the same nostalgia as your game. I hope you make another one like this, only longer!

Thanks for persevering! Sorry about the boots issue, we'll take a close look to see if it's a bug. Very honored that you enjoyed it as much as you did!

(+1)

I completely agree with the comparison of this with that official Shadowgate remake--Infested felt much more like Shadowgate to me than that remake.

(+1)(-1)

Love it so far but I'm completely stuck now, I need to find either something to throw at the button or some way to make the crypto machine work. I feel like I have just overlooked the throwing item at some point but I can't find it anywhere

Thanks for the feedback. The throwing item is not in plain sight. It is hidden somewhere so...It's meant to be overlooked ;)

(+1)

Check the floors in every hallway.

(+1)

This got me too - everything else struck the perfect balance between challenging but sensible - 3 hours well spent, excellent game !!

(2 edits) (+1)

Very nice game. although sound slider will be nice.

Question, what the hell do i do with nutrient injector? i threw 3 chems into it, it says "chems has been added" but it doesn't let me press the button. :B

Edit: oh nvm, i needed to add some more. Awkwardly it just doesn't explain itself properly. probably should type "you feel you might want to add something else here" rather than "chems has been added, now just press the button".

Edit 2: Okay, yea, i've beaten it. Very nice. Took me around 1.5 hour. Feels nice. I would recommend you to play something like "robinson's requiem" as it kinda expanded onto such ideas of questing/puzzling survival quiet a lot.

I'll definitely check out 'Robinson's Requiem'. Thanks for all the feed back. The Nutrient Injector is vague because the clues as to specifically what needs to be added are given through another puzzle. I do, however, understand what you mean by "...it just doesn't explain itself properly". That's a good point.

Oh, and the sound slider is a very good idea too!

(+1)

Cheers, m8. :)

(2 edits) (+1)

Very enjoyable! I haven't played any of the games cited as influence for this one, but if they're anything like Infested, I need to play them! I loved all the ways you can die (and of course, the fact that the game auto-saves just before your fatal mistake, thereby avoiding unnecessary frustration).

Thanks for making this great game free. I'll tell my friends about it.

https://grahfmetal.itch.io/infested

By the way, I ended the game with several items in my inventory that I never used. Did I miss some secrets? Were they planned for sections that were cut from the final game? Or are they just there for flavour?

(+1)

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. If you haven't played the Kemco NES games than I cannot recommend them enough. 'Shadowgate' in particular is a masterpiece and my all time favorite puzzle game. Shadowgate is about 4x larger than Infested. I hope you do play it as well because Infested actually has five hidden references to Shadowgate ;).

As for the extra items; those are red herrings. Much like in the NES titles there are far more items in the game beyond those used to solve the puzzles. It's simply to throw you off and keep you guessing.

(+2)

I want to deeply thank for bringing me WAY BACK into my youth of dying so many times from trying everything on evil things. This is so damn good that I even made a video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcAGPxk0Zxw

(+3)

Infested is a pitch perfect hommage to Kemco NES classics Shadowgate, Uninvited, and Deja Vu in its gameplay, sound, art, and mood. All of the strengths - with updated design ideas and friendly user interface - no weaknesses. Fans of the Kemco classics will be in absolute heaven and want more, and new players will definitely see what the fuss is about. I couldn't have picked a better first game for my collection!

Very flattering. Thank you very much for your kind words.

(+1)

Thanks for making the game!

(+2)

I reviewed this game in my collection already, but I wanted to express my love of it again here. Infested is a love-letter to this style of game, while bringing new ideas and a PC/Mac-friendly interface that makes it a joy to play.

That means a LOT coming from you, Ben. Thanks :D
